For a message to be correctly encrypted and decrypted, both the sender and receiver needed to set up their Enigma machines in exactly the same way. These settings were distributed on the monthly codesheets:
1. The Datum or date.
2. The Walzenlage or rotor order for that date.
3. The Ringstellung, or ring setting for that date.
4. The Steckerverbindungen or plugging for that date.
5. The Grundstellung or indicator setting for that date.
Each day, before encoding/decrypting a message, the operator would set their machine according to the date by choosing three from a set of five rotors in a certain order. He would also change the position of the rotor rings of each rotor. Then he connects the plugboard and finally the set rotor initial position.
